Mississippi State Fires Zach Arnett After One Season
Arnett was named head coach in January 2023
Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season, the school announced Monday.
Arnett was named head coach in January 2023 after serving as the team's defensive coordinator for the previous two seasons. He led the Bulldogs to a 3-9 record in his first season, including a 1-7 mark in SEC play.
"We appreciate Zach's hard work and dedication to our football program," Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon said in a statement. "However, after careful consideration, we have decided to make a change in leadership."
Arnett's dismissal comes as a surprise, as he was widely expected to be retained for a second season. The Bulldogs showed some improvement under his leadership, including a 24-22 loss to No. 22 Texas A&M in the season finale.
Mississippi State will now begin a search for a new head coach. The Bulldogs are expected to be looking for an experienced coach with a proven track record of success.
