ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia appeals court on Wednesday agreed to review a lower court ruling allowing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to continue her investigation into possible interference in the 2020 election by former President Donald Trump and his allies.
The court's decision came in response to a motion filed by lawyers for Trump, who have argued that Willis is politically motivated and that her investigation is illegitimate. The appeals court did not immediately set a schedule for its review.
Willis has been investigating Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia, including a phone call he made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which he urged him to "find" enough votes to declare him the winner. Willis has also subpoenaed several Trump allies, including former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has called Willis' investigation a "witch hunt." He has also accused Willis of being a "radical Democrat" who is trying to use her position to damage him politically.
The appeals court's decision to review the lower court ruling is a significant development in the case. If the appeals court rules in favor of Trump, it could halt Willis' investigation and derail her efforts to hold him accountable for his alleged actions.
