Akne: Definition and Causes
What is Acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that affects people of all ages. It occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin become clogged with oil and bacteria, leading to the formation of pimples.
Causes of Acne
There are several factors that can contribute to the development of acne, including:
- Hormonal changes: Acne is often triggered by hormonal changes that occur during puberty. These changes can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more oil.
- Bacteria: The bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a common cause of acne. This bacteria lives on the skin and feeds on the oil produced by the sebaceous glands. When P. acnes overgrows, it can lead to the formation of pimples.
- Clogged pores: When the sebaceous glands produce too much oil, it can clog the pores in the skin. This can lead to the formation of blackheads and whiteheads.
- Inflammation: Acne is often associated with inflammation. This inflammation can be caused by the bacteria P. acnes or by the body's own immune response to the clogged pores.
